Niagara-on-the-Lake is known for its luxury boutique hotels, but the town has so many fantastic hidden gem accommodations—AKA historic inns and family-run bed and breakfasts.

Not only do these types of accommodations tend to offer better value for money, but they also come with a level of service you won’t get at a larger hotel.

Plus, they include homemade (and sometimes gourmet) breakfasts and the properties themselves are beautiful; usually well-preserved historic homes filled with character.

If you’re looking for unique places to stay in Niagara-on-the-Lake, start with this list of underrated gems.

(FYI: this is not a comprehensive list by any means—there are hundreds of B&Bs and country inns in Niagara).

PS: I’m a Niagara local. I also worked in the tourism industry in Niagara-on-the-Lake back in the day. It was my job to help people plan their NOTL trips, including booking accommodations!

Harrogate House Inn

Rating: 9.8 on Booking.com | 5.0 on Google
📍 Location: 255 King Street (Old Town)
🚗 Parking: Free guest parking on-site

Harrogate House is a quaint four-room inn located in the heart of Niagara-on-the-Lake’s Old Town.

Dating back to 1818, each room in this 200-year-old home has either a private balcony or a private terrace facing the beautiful surrounding gardens. And while it’s undergone extensive renovations, the property still maintains its unique historic ambiance.

The innkeepers are extremely welcoming and attentive—and one happens to be a trained chef, which is why you’ll see so many reviews raving about the breakfasts they serve.

The best part? They change the menu daily so you won’t have the same breakfast twice if you’re staying several nights.

Although it’s considered an inn, the service and setup is very much a bed and breakfast—but with plenty of privacy. You can eat breakfast outdoors on your private terrace or inside during the colder months.

The indoor dining area has separate tables, so you can choose whether or not to mingle with the other guests.

There is dedicated guest parking on-site, and everything in town—from shops to restaurants and theatres—is only a short walk away.

South Landing Inn

⭐ Rating: 9.6 on Booking.com | 4.5 on Google
📍 Location: 21 Front Street South, Queenston
🚗 Parking: Free guest parking on-site

If you’re looking for accommodations with easy access to Niagara Falls and downtown Niagara-on-the-Lake, I’d highly recommend South Landing Inn.

Built in the early 1800s, this historic six-room inn has everything you want in a Niagara-on-the-Lake getaway: it’s charming, quiet, and located in a lovely area right next to the Niagara River.

Everywhere you turn, you’ll notice something that makes this property unique—from the up-cycled furnishings to the gorgeous Persian rugs and the one-of-a-kind decor pieces (like a vintage mail sorter in the lobby).

This inn also has two rooms that can sleep up to six guests—which is something you typically can’t find at most NOTL hotels. If you’re travelling with family or friends and want to stay together, definitely check out the Riverview Suite.

Spanning the entire third floor, this apartment-style room has three beds, two bathrooms, a full kitchen, a spacious living/dining area, and a Juliette balcony overlooking the river.

In terms of amenities, I loved seeing organic and Canadian-made shampoo, soap, and body lotion in the bathrooms.

All guests have access to the second-floor balcony, the guest pantry with complimentary tea and coffee, and the cozy lounge area.

My favourite part about the lounge area (aside from the beautiful decor, of course) is the selection of board games they have for guests.

To top it all off, your stay here includes a phenomenal “continental” breakfast. They call it continental, but it’s actually prepared by a chef and it’s 10x better than any breakfast I’ve had at a chain hotel. (They also asked for my dietary preferences before I arrived, which was so appreciated.)

South Landing Inn is a 15-minute drive from Old Town Niagara-on-the-Lake and a 15–20-minute drive from the main attractions in Niagara Falls.

Inn On King

⭐ Rating: 9.1 on Booking.com | 5.0 on Google
📍 Location: 672 King Street (Old Town)
🚗 Parking: Free guest parking on-site

Inn On King offers the best of both worlds: the comforts of a hotel with the service you’d expect from a bed and breakfast.

The rooms are modern and newly renovated, each with its own private ensuite, flat-screen TV, and an electric fireplace. The showers have rainfall shower heads—something I always appreciate at any type of accommodation.

Continental breakfast is included, and the hosts make all their baked goods in-house. If you like the idea of waking up to the smell of freshly baked croissants every morning, you’ll love this inn.

Their larger King Loft room has a kitchenette, mini fridge, and its own entrance from the backyard for a more private experience.

If you’re staying in one of their smaller rooms, you have access to the guest common area with a large dining table, coffee maker, kettle, toaster, and essentials like water, juice, and tea.

The hosts really make this property extra special. They’re extremely friendly, accommodating, and always around to recommend local must-sees.

Inn On King is also centrally located, roughly a 20-minute walk from Queen Street.

School House Bed & Breakfast

⭐ Rating: 9.7 on Booking.com | 4.8 on Google
📍 Location: 40 Platoff Street (Old Town)
🚗 Parking: Free guest parking on-site

Originally built in 1859 as a local public school, this heritage building has been completely renovated and transformed into a six-suite bed and breakfast.

The building itself is beautiful and well-maintained, with 17-foot ceilings, oak-paneled walls, and a gothic chandelier hanging in the foyer. It feels a bit like stepping back in time when you step inside.

Most suites have two levels, with a loft-style bedroom upstairs and a separate sitting area downstairs. Almost every review mentions how clean, spacious, and comfortable the rooms are.

A continental breakfast is included, and the hosts are super warm and welcoming.

In terms of location, School House B&B is close to just about everything. It’s only one block from Queen Street, so less than a five-minute walk to NOTL’s top cafes, shops, and restaurants.

The Woodbourne Inn

⭐ Rating: 9.7 on Booking.com | 4.9 on Google
📍 Location: 214 Four Mile Creek Road, St. Davids
🚗 Parking: Free parking located immediately adjacent to the property

The Woodbourne Inn is stunning inside and out. Dating back to 1839, this Georgian and Victorian-style manor has been fully restored into a boutique eight-room inn that feels both high-end and historical.

The amenities and decor here are next-level, from the antique furniture and Persian rugs to the organic shampoo and soaker tubs. The common areas are just as inviting—including the cozy library, complete with floor-to-ceiling shelves and a large fireplace.

Outside, there’s a garden area with tables, chairs, and twinkling string lights surrounded by massive, towering trees (most of which are rarely seen in Niagara).

Another thing to love about this inn? The staff goes above and beyond with lots of extra little touches.

For example, they send a pre-breakfast tray to your door in the morning with coffee, juice, and a house-made pastry.

Their actual breakfast is freshly prepared by a chef and served in the dining room or out on the patio. Made with seasonal and local ingredients, it’s a gourmet meal and on-par with something you’d find at a 5-star hotel.

The Woodbourne Inn is located in St. Davids (a village within Niagara-on-the-Lake), which is a 15-minute drive from NOTL’s historic downtown core

It’s a great spot if you’re looking to stay somewhere in between Niagara-on-the-Lake and Niagara Falls

A few things to note: most rooms are on the second or third floor and the building does not have elevators. Additionally, the rooms do not have TVs.

The Kent Motel

⭐ Rating: 8.9 on Booking.com | 4.7 on Google
📍 Location: 19 Front Street S, Queenston
🚗 Parking: Free guest parking on-site

The Kent Motel is essentially the only motel in Niagara-on-the-Lake. But don’t let the word “motel” fool you—this boutique property is anything but basic.

Built on the site of one of Canada’s first railway stations, the owners kept that classic motor inn vibe but updated it with modern amenities.

The rooms are Instagram-worthy, designed with mid-century modern furniture, up-cycled vintage decor, handwoven area rugs, and hand-printed Niagara posters.

They also have a few rooms with river-facing balconies that sit side-by-side, which is a great option if you’re travelling with a group or a few friends.

As for the location, the Kent Motel is in a quiet residential area in Queenston (a village within Niagara-on-the-Lake) next to the Niagara River.

It’s close to the Niagara Parkway Recreation Trail, historic attractions like Laura Secord Homestead, the Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours, and several wineries—including Ravine and Queenston Mile Vineyard.

From this area, it’s a 15-minute drive to Niagara-on-the-Lake’s historic downtown area and a 20-minute drive to the tourist hub in Niagara Falls.
