Expat in Edinburgh: Month 9

Feb 19

Edinburgh Castle Winter
Thanks to some serious overindulgence in December, January was characterized by detox and recuperation. I did very little in January – I think it may have been the most low-key month I’ve had since arriving in Edinburgh!

What I’ve been up to

I spent the first weekend of the month in Glasgow, visiting some of best food and drink venues in the trendy West End. I’ll admit didn’t connect with Glasgow initially, but I love it a little more each time I visit. Glasgow’s charm and character lies within its restaurants, nightlife, music and arts scene, and the best way to get beneath the surface of this dynamic city is through these channels.

I met up with the lovely Edna from Expat Edna – as she happened to be in Edinburgh for Hogmanay – and sampled one of the specialty tea blends from Eteaket’s extensive menu.

Working, sleeping, and exercising – riveting, I know! Like I said, January was primarily about detox and recuperation, and attempting to save some money for my upcoming winter travels.

What I’ve been eating

My favourite meal from the weekend I spent in Glasgow was from Brel – a restaurant along Ashton Lane, known for their huge variety of international and local beers. I had their steamed Scottish mussels in a fragrant lemongrass, chili, and coriander broth.

The burgers at Bread Meats Bread are often touted as some of the best in Edinburgh, but I visited for a different reason entirely: poutine. When I saw poutine with proper cheese curds on the menu, I made a beeline for this restaurant. And they offer not one, but five types of the indulgent dish, including sweet poutine (with sweet potato fries), and Glaspoutine – the classic version topped with grated cheddar.

So lovely to meet you as well! 🙂 And if I’d known Bread Meats Bread had poutine, I totally would have gone in!

I should have given you a heads up about the poutine! Next time 😉
