I’ve only been living in Edinburgh for two months, but I can confidently say that Scotland is the best place to be if you’re hungover. It’s a bold statement, I know, and I’m sure you’re wondering what brought me to this groundbreaking conclusion.
Two words, guys: greasy goodness.
Occasionally when I’m hungover, I want nothing more than an IV of electrolytes and vitamins (preferably from somewhere like this mobile hangover clinic), but 9 times out of 10 I turn into a ravenous beast and want to eat anything and everything. And even better if it happens to be greasy.
Scots know greasy food. Hailing from North America, I thought I’d seen my fair share of junky, delicious, and disgusting hangover food, but Scotland managed to surprise me. They don’t mess around here — they even deep fry their pizza!
Without further ado, these foods (and drink) are the reason you’re better off nursing a hangover in Scotland.
Munchy box
We’ve all been there: it’s 2am and you’re starving. Your options are limited — McDonald’s or the questionable leftovers in your fridge, and neither sound appealing. Behold the Munchy Box: AKA every food you could possibly want at ungodly hours of the night, together in one magical box.
Contents may vary, but it generally contains pizza, fries, onion rings, kebab meat, fried chicken, naan bread, garlic bread, coleslaw, and dipping sauces, all neatly crammed together in a large pizza box.
If I hadn’t known this was concocted in Glasgow, I would have guessed it was a gift sent from the Hangover Gods themselves.

Pizza Crunch
What’s better than a hangover pizza? A deep-fried, hangover pizza. Popular at chip shops, a small frozen-style pizza is covered in batter and fried.
If that doesn’t sound like enough trans fat for you, opt for a pizza crunch supper: deep fried pizza with a side of fries.

Chips with salt ‘n’ sauce
Salty chips smothered in sweet and tangy brown sauce is popular throughout the UK, but brown sauce (AKA sauce) in Edinburgh is often mixed with vinegar, giving it an extra kick. Chips with salt ‘n’ sauce and cheese is also a viable option.
Deep-fried mars bar
Craving something sweet rather than savoury? Try a hot and gooey deep-fried Mars bar. But be forewarned: after you try it, you’ll never want to eat a regular Mars bar again.

Macaroni pie
Essentially a mini pie crust filled with macaroni and cheese and baked. Not only is it delicious, it’s also genius: macaroni and cheese in a handheld, utensil-less form. Because let’s be real — when you’re hungover, you can’t be bothered with a fork anyways.

Irn Bru
Scots generally rave about this fizzy, neon orange-coloured pop (which is often referred to as the country’s other national drink), but they also swear by its hangover curing properties. Perhaps it’s the 34 grams of sugar?
The reality is, if you plan to visit Scotland, you’ll probably end up hungover at some point during your visit.
Whether you find yourself getting carried away at a whisky distillery, or some friendly locals demonstrate their hospitable ways by forcing countless shots on you at the pub one night, fret not! Take comfort in the fact that you will have a plethora of deep-fried, fat-laden, stroke-inducing foods to help rid you of your hungover state.
Would you try any of these foods? What’s your go-to hangover meal?

My go-to hangover meal is KFC, but that munchy box looks sooo good. I mean, I just want to get drunk in Scotland to enjoy one! 😉
The munchy box is ridiculous – in the best way! And I think that sounds like an excellent plan, ha! 🙂
I’m going to gain so much weight in Scotland.
My hangover go-to is always spicy and often soupy. Tom yam works wonders!
That’s a great idea – I love Tom Yam! I need to have it on a hangover day ASAP.
My hangover food is mac and cheese and sparkling water. Holy crap, I had no idea that Scotland was such a junk foodie’s paradise. The Munchie Box is brilliant but if I had to pick I’d definitely choose the macoroni pie!
Scotland is such a junk foodie’s paradise! If you’re hangover food is mac and cheese, you’ll definitely love the macaroni pie 😉
I love Irn Bru and battered Mars bars but haven’t tried the rest – don’t know if my stomach could handle it all! xo
Haha yeah, too much of these foods can be a bit much! I try to indulge only occasionally 🙂
I love this! I have always had a fascination with “hangover food” and often that is the first question I ask of people who are from a different place – “what’s the hangover food where you are from??” I am from San Diego, CA so firmly believe that nothing cures a hangover like a huge burrito 🙂
Glad I’m not the only one – I’m always interested to hear of hangover foods from different countries, as well 🙂 And burritos are a great hangover meal!
Hahaha, love this post! How regularly have you been hungover to try all these foods?! 😉 I tend to stay away from greasy, heavy food (which wasn’t easy living in England for 9 years), but I have to say the macaroni pie looks very tempting… The fried Mars bar though? Too much for me!

Haha it is pretty sad how often I’ve been hungover since moving here! I need to learn to stay away from the greasy food here – please teach me your ways! And I agree about the deep-fried Mars bar – I tried it once, but don’t think I could ever eat another one.
The Munchy Box really does look like it’s straight out of heaven. Also, what does Irn Bru actually taste like (besides sugar in liquid form)?
Sugar in liquid form is a pretty accurate description, ha, but I think it tastes quite similar to Cream Soda.
interesting to knew about scotland edinburgh food, i feel more hungry to visite and to try all thoses kind of food

Thanks, Ken!
